Welcome!

Welcome to The Holzemville Community Center, the hub of learning in Holzemville.

I currently have information about my two hobbies: Cooking, and landscaping. Okay. My two favorite hobbies are eating, and chilling-out in my yard, but to partake in those activities, I need to cook and maintain my yard and garden. And you get to benefit as I share what I've learned.

In real life, I'm a real estate broker in Oregon. If you want to see my work site, go to SeeOregonCityHomes.com. But in my younger days, I did work as a cook in a major hotel, and I maintained a 2-mile long boulivard, and adjecent mini-parks for a city that prided itself on it's beautiful boulivards. I worked side-by-side with some great professionals. And if nothing else, I try to learn from those around me.

Come and explore the practical information included here in the Community Center.

Cooking

Cooking with Intense Heat

There are some foods that usually taste better in a restaurant. Steaks, and stir fry, to name two. Why do they taste better in restaurants? It's the heat. You'll never get the broiler in your range to sear a steak like a restaurant broiler can. And your wok will never get hot enough on your stove top. But in this course I'll show you how to make effective use of your grill. I'll also show you a unique way of making stir fry outside.

Setting-up a New Kitchen

You got five toasters for your wedding, but your drawers and cabinets are empty. It's time to return four of those toasters, and get some other stuff for your kitchen, but what? In this course we cover the basic equipment that you'll need. We'll give a special look at some multitasking tools. If you already have a kitchen, check to see if there's anything you've forgotten about. Sometimes just having the right tools can spur your creativity.

Recommended Books About Cooking

Note that I didn't say "cookbooks". Cookbook implies a book full of recipies, and you really can't learn how to cook just by following directions. My favorite books about cooking focus on how to cook. They may include recipies, but they explain not just how to follow the recipe, but why ingrediants are included, and why certain steps are followed. And they do so in a way that makes you want to read more.

Gardening and Landscaping

What New Homeowners Need

You've lived in an appartment for years, and now you've bought your first home. Surprise! The garage is empty. The gardening and landscaping tools needed to maintain your yard didn't come with the house. The knee high grass is suggesting that at the very least you'll need a lawn mower, but what else? Every time you need a new tool, you could take a trip to the local big-box, or you can take this course, and learn which tools are the most useful to have around -- and get some hints on how to use them, too.

The Care and Feeding of a Suburban Lawn

Whether you're starting a new lawn, or trying to care for an existing lawn, you need to take this course. Lawns are deceptively easy looking, but they really need more care than mowing them when they get too long, and watering them before they turn brown. And the answer isn't on the back of a fertilizer bag. In this course I'll show you how to get your lawn into shape, and keep it that way with the least amount of effort, and the least money. My method uses minimal to no chemicals, so your lawn can be safe for your kids and pets to play on, too.
