When I became a homeowner, I didn't want to be one of those guys going around with a string trimmer all morning, and a leaf blower all afternoon. I still don't own or use a leaf blower, but I finally broke down and bought a string trimmer. I have a Black and Decker cordless grass shears and a long handle for it. That's great for tight spaces -- especially if there are plants you don't want to accidently whack with a string trimmer. But too often a big chunk in the mulch would jam it up. It also was fairly inefficient for big areas. During the summer, we don't get much rain, so the grass doesn't grow -- except in a few shady areas. Before I got this string trimmer, I either had to spend all day with the grass shears, or pull out the lawn mower for these small areas. Now I grab this trimmer, and stroll around my yard, whacking away at clumps of grass, and emerging weeds. This is far more convienent than dragging an extension cord behind me, switching outlets for each side of the house. It's also more convienent than carrying around a gas-powered trimmer. With this cordless electric trimmer, I press the button, whack away, release the button, and continue my stroll. It is heavier than the corded model -- unless you count the cord you're dragging. If you're under about 5'4", this trimmer might get heavy because you'd have to lift it up to carry. But all in all it's not too bad for an average height or taller adult to stroll around with this trimmer. The head tilts for edging, but except for quick touch-ups, I wouldn't recommend using it for edging. That's what my Edge Hog from Black & Decker is for. The charge lasts a long time, and if you want, you can mount the charger to a wall, and recharge the trimmer every time you put it away. The bottom line is I can't imagine how any other trimmer could be a better choice for my suburban home. I use it far more than I even expected.
